The Women's Land Army (WLA) was established during the First World War as a response to the significant labor shortages in agriculture caused by the war. With many men enlisted in the military, there was an urgent need for workers to ensure food production continued. The WLA played a crucial role in supporting the war effort by mobilizing women to work on farms across the country.
Formation and Purpose
The WLA was officially formed in 1917 in the United Kingdom. Its primary purpose was to recruit women to fill the gaps left by men who had gone to fight. The organization aimed to ensure that farms could maintain production levels of essential food supplies. The initiative was not only about meeting agricultural needs but also about empowering women and recognizing their capabilities in traditionally male-dominated roles.
