Origins

Playing cards are believed to have originated in China during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). The earliest references to card games appear in literature from this period, suggesting that they were used for entertainment and gambling.

Spread to Asia

By the 14th century, playing cards had spread to other parts of Asia, including India and Persia. The Persian game "Ganjifa" is particularly notable, as it used a set of cards made from various materials such as wood, ivory, and paper. The designs often featured intricate artwork.
